Back Pain Relief

How To Achieve Back Pain Relief

The quest for back nerve pain relief can seem like a lonely one; but trust me there are many people out there who are in exactly the same position as you.

There are several important things to remember when you are in pain. Firstly and most importantly you are in control. You must never start to believe that your pain control is up to a doctor or surgeon; it is your body and you must take control.

Next you have to look at the different aspects of pain relief. Backs, unlike many other parts of the human body, don’t ‘just heal’ they are left weakened or affected after an injury. This does not mean that you back will not get better, but it does mean that it will never the quite the same. For many people the changes they make to their lifestyles, diet and exercise routines as a direct result of back injury means that the overall health of their back is considerably better after an injury than it ever was before. For this reason you have to look at short term, immediate relief for your sciatic pain and you also have to have a long term plan. With the correct long term plan you may never revert to the acute pain which is dealt with using pain relief.

Before committing to any medication, physiotherapy or lifestyle changes you also have to review your mental attitude towards you health and your back. As I said above you must be in control and you must look to the long term if you are to get any satisfactory results at all. The problem with backs, is that they have had some very bad press. ‘Oh no, not your back, poor you, if you need anything let me know’, all very kind offers but very different to a cold ‘in a couple of days you will be back to normal’. This attitude which we have developed about backs affects not only our treatment of them, but also how we treat people who had damaged their backs. So the first thing you must do is not let other peoples depressing views affect you. The key to everything in life is positive mental attitude.

Hopefully, you are now ready to start controlling your pain and your back. There is no avoiding the fact that pain killers are essential for acute pain. I highly recommend medicated pain relief immediately after any back injury. Either go to your doctor, or if you can’t get to him, arrange a home visit, but do organise some medication. The reason for this is simple. You need to give you body a chance and that means that you need to rest. When you are in pain you are constantly processing this pain and hence your brain and body are working and not resting. By dulling the pain you are giving yourself down time.

Rest at the beginning of a recovery is important for several reasons. Firstly you need to be able to think clearly and this is impossible when you are fighting extreme fatigue. Secondly, if you are in pain you will be tense; these tense muscles will put more strain on your injured back and may even cause additional problems in the shoulders, arms or legs which are totally resulting from the pain and not the actual injury.

During the time when you are medicated you need to learn to relax. This is a skill which many people do not have and will never possess. However, learning to relax is probably one of the most essential life skills which you can learn. Some of the best relaxation methods are found at the beginning and end of yoga sessions. A quick glance through a book or website will show you some of the techniques. Pick a couple which you think will work for you and try them out. These take practise; you are unlikely to have success on your first attempt. Treat these exercises as you would medication. For the first few days you need to be doing these exercises two or three times a day.

Now you should be in the right mind set to start the long term management of your back and not be obsessed with your back pain relief.
